AIMSSEC Courses
Professional Development Courses for Mathematics Teachers
Certificate of Further Professional Studies
TEN DAY RESIDENTIAL COURSES FOLLOWED BY THREE MONTHS DISTANCE LEARNING
Mathematical Thinking, Problem Solving and Technology in Teaching and Learning Mathematics
The first residential course was held in Muizenberg in July 2004 and since then twelve other courses have been held for a total of 587 educators and subject advisers from all the SA provinces. Future courses will be held in different venues in
South Africa during the school holidays.
Mathematics teachers of grades 4 to 12 and advisory teachers
working in historically disadvantaged schools are invited to apply for a fully
bursaried Certificate of Further Professional Studies Course (CFPS). The CFPS
course is open to practitioners working in primary, secondary, further and special
education. The course is designed to assist educators to improve their educational
practice and to extend their knowledge of mathematics and their thinking about
teaching and learning mathematics. The course also provides a helpful introduction
to advanced study.
Participants on the course will be given an extensive pack
of classroom lesson materials designed for the South African school curriculum.
This is an intensive 10 day residential course followed by distance learning
over the following three months. The Certificate of Further Professional Studies
is awarded on satisfactory completion of a 2000 word assignment reflecting
on the implementation in your own classroom of the strategies and resources
developed on the course.
This is a preliminary course to
an Advanced Certificate in Education for Subject Leaders in Mathematics accredited by the University of Stellenbosch.
The course is taught by six visiting lecturers from South Africa and arouund the world, living in residence with the teachers, together with
individual sessions by other South African lecturers. The course is open to
educators from all across South Africa and places are limited. There are three specialist groups for teachers of grades 4-6 (intermadiate phase), grades 7-9 (senior phase) and grades
10-12 (FET).
Application forms can be sent to you by email, please apply
to aimssec@aims.ac.za , or you can print them from this website (see below).
Completed application forms should emailed or posted to Dr Barrie Barnard at The African
Institute for Mathematical Sciences, 6 Melrose Rd, Muizenberg, 7945 South Africa.
There will be bursaries covering tuition fees, accommodation
and a contribution towards travel expenses. Places are limited so it is advisable
to apply early. Look out for further details on the AIMSSEC website.
Acceptance on the course will depend on the full support of the Principal of the school and the
Head of Mathematics and a commitment to follow up the course by using some of the course materials
in the classroom. So that teachers can work together and support each other, pairs of applicants
from the same school or groups from neighbouring schools will be welcomed.
The CFPS award is based on the equivalent of 65 hours of tuition (part face to face and part distance
learning) together with a 2000+ word assignment which may include a portfolio of commentary on lessons
candidates have taught, other work in school or advisory teaching they have done or action research
studies undertaken. In addition there is a written test on the last day of the course.
Advanced Certificate in Education to Train Subject Leaders
AIMSSEC is running an Advanced Certificate in Education to train subject leaders in partnership with the University of Stellenbosch for 100 teachers in two cohorts funded by the Dutch Government in 2009 to 2011 and further cohorts funded by the Zenex Foundation. Extending the course to meet the pressing demand from teachers for professional development and to give more young learners in South Africa their entitlement to a good mathematical education is dependent on raising the necessary sponsorship funding.
The course, open to teachers and other educators, is designed to extend and
update knowledge of mathematics and educational issues within primary, secondary, special and further education in mathematics,
and to develop skills to support evaluation and enquiry into areas of professional practice.
The Advanced Certificate in Education is a 2 year course. The award is based on the equivalent of
240 hours of tuition (part face to face and part through distance learning) together with successful
performance in examinations and submission of assignments totalling 8000 words which may include a portfolio of commentary on lessons
candidates have taught, other work in school or advisory teaching they have done or action research
studies undertaken.
Candidates will be supported in carrying out action research studies in their schools. Suitably
qualified candidates may gain credit towards a masters degree by submitting a report of an
appropriate standard which brings the total number of words for their course assignments up to
18,000 to 20,000.
