Professional Development Courses for Mathematics Educators of Grades 4 to 12

This is a group of lecturers, teachers, field trainers and subject advisers who attended the AIMSSEC 10-day residential courses at Stellenbosch High School in January 2010 for the ACE and the Mathematical Thinking Courses.

MATHEMATICAL THINKING, PROBLEM SOLVING AND TECHNOLOGY IN TEACHING AND LEARNING MATHEMATICS

Ten day residential courses followed by three months distance learning are offered in the school holidays in different venues in South Africa for educators working in historically disadvantaged schools.

The next residential courses will be at Stellenbosch High School, W.Cape:
MT 14: registration 28 June - ends 8 July 2010.

The course has been run thirteen times for a total of 587 educators from all the South African provinces, including 40 subject advisers and field trainers. There is a long waiting list for this highly popular course. Bursaries are offered to teachers from different provinces for each course.

The Certificate of Further Professional Studies is awarded, after the end of the three month distance learning phase, on satisfactory completion of a 2000 word assignment reflecting on the implementation in your own classroom of the teaching strategies and resources developed on the course. Some of the educators who do well in this preliminary course will be selected for places on the two year part time University of Stellenbosch/AIMSSEC ACE course for Training Subject Leaders in Mathematics.

THE ADVANCED CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION (ACE) TO TRAIN MATHEMATICS SUBJECT LEADERS

The ACE in Mathematics is an innovative two year professional development programme involving both residential and distance learning components and using the Internet, Interactive TV and Cellphone technologies to link teachers on an extended campus in Limpopo, NW Province, KZN, Eastern Cape and Western Cape. A school cluster network has been set up to empower teachers to support each other and to learn together. Subject leaders are trained to run workshops for other teachers to cascade and multiply the benefits to more teachers and learners.

The course offers an NQF level 6 qualification with an opportunity for all participants to engage in Action Research. Suitably qualified candidates can elect to write a further dissertation to contribute to a masters level qualification. Accredited by Stellenbosch University this is a collaboration between The Institute for Mathematics and Science Teaching of The University of Stellenbosch (IMSTUS) and The African Institute for Mathematics Schools Enrichment Centre (AIMSSEC). This partnership is ideally suited to conduct the programme as it brings together a combination of local knowledge and experience of Mathematics Education and Teacher Education, and the knowledge and experience of academics from leading universities around the world.
